The word secure gets used loosely. Almost every provider encrypts files in transit and on its servers, but most of them also hold the keys. That means the company, or anyone who can compel it, can read your files. Zero-knowledge encryption is the real line. Files are encrypted on your device with a key only you hold.
Proton Drive, Sync.com, Internxt, and MEGA apply zero-knowledge encryption to everything by default. pCloud and Icedrive encrypt on their servers but make true zero-knowledge an optional add-on or a separate folder. Google, Microsoft, and Dropbox don't offer it on personal accounts at all.
Where the company is based is the other half of privacy. A Swiss provider like Proton or pCloud, or an EU one like Internxt in Spain or Filen in Germany, answers to stricter data-protection law than a US provider under the CLOUD Act. The table leads with the providers that get both parts right.
Frequently asked
- What is zero-knowledge encryption?
- Files are encrypted on your device before they reach the provider, with a key only you hold. The provider stores scrambled data and cannot read your files, even if it's hacked or served a warrant.
- Is Google Drive or Dropbox secure?
- They encrypt files in transit and at rest, which stops outside interception. But they hold the keys, so your files are not private from the provider itself. Neither offers zero-knowledge encryption on personal plans.
- Does encryption make cloud storage slower?
- For everyday files on a modern device, you won't notice. Some zero-knowledge providers do have slower web access or skip in-browser previews, because the decryption happens on your device.
